Lightning Strikes Pillars of Dignity

by Doré

This assemblage was intended to demonstrate the elegance of subdued, harmonious colours with simple, but forceful shapes. However, if this work brings to mind the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City (that infamous day of Sept 11, 2001), I cannot disagree, as it affects me similarly. Perhaps you can interpret the ashes in the lower left corner, the crumpled silver arch within the dark circle, the background grid, or even the choice of colours--none of which are light in spirit.

The strip of silver lightning breaks in the opposite direction of the pillars (towers)--a threatening, but not harmful portent. The circular rust disk behind the flash, suggests a "forbidden" sign, such as we have for closed roads and no smoking areas.

If this is about destruction and terrorism, it bears touches of warning and deflection--alas with no hope.
