Africa's Fortune

by Doré

Behind a delicately flowing, but confining, screen is placed a dark red shield which commands our attention. At its center are emblazoned luminous chards of glass and shining metal. Glass strips lie on either side. A large grey circle embraces and focuses this emblem, symbolic of the riches/diamonds torn from the African continent.

Black pearls dangle from the central shield and are massed at the lower right corner. A few strands slip out from under the restraining screen. Perhaps these pearls represent the black native peoples stolen and enslaved from Africa, only a few of which escaped the ruinous exploitation. The rusted lock and the broken bat further symbolize the horrible suffering of oppression/slavery.

There is, nonetheless, a pervading beauty offered by the use of gracious colours: pale tan, tones of green, silver & black.
