Watchman, What of the Night?      by Doré

Here is a scene of darkness in a mysterious European city, possibly a haunting corner of old London where Dickens researched his compelling tales.

How does one encounter the terrors of the night? Bravado and bold colour......and a bit of sparkle! Keep moving, keep puttin' on a display, keep the "upper hand." yes, it is about not being intimidated, not showing any evidence of weakness.....

This is a bold assemblage, with lots of strong shapes and powerful reds. You will notice a painted scrap of plywood in the center, painted with two tones of pale blue and a fire-engine bright red. Behind it is a tail-light of yellow, red and clear (white).

[Another work, which I designed about 4 years ago, has a similar quality. It also features a tail-light, with a broken olive-coloured bottle, and is titled Streetcorner / Midnight. It was born of fun in San Diego (not London).]

What of the Night? Is it a positive time, or a time of worry and fear....or remembrance? And who watches?
